NPC BBWAT conducts biodiversity monitoring, spots Rafflesia baletei

NPC’s Buhi-Barit Watershed Area Team has recently conducted biodiversity monitoring in Mt. Asog in Camarines Sur as part of watershed protection and conservation measure.

In their monitoring and patrolling, the BBWAT also spotted Rafflesia baletei, a parasitic plant endemic to the Philippines and the smallest species of the genus Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower.

“The presence of a variety of species in an ecosystem increases its resistance to environmental stress and this ensures the sustainability of the reservation,” said BBWAT’s Chief Mr. Reuel R. Declaro.

Rafflesia is an extremely rare flower and having verified its presence in the watershed determines the integrity of the forest.

As part of its mandates, NPC protects and rehabilitates 11 watershed in the country that supports power generation.
