NPC’s watershed teams partner with communities in planting and nourishing trees

NPC’s Buhi Barit Watershed team in Camarines Sur and Lake Lanao Agus River Watershed team in Lanao held tree planting activities with community residents, government units and military personnel to celebrate the 121st Philippine Civil Service Anniversary and to foster environmental awareness in their respective areas.

The Buhi Barit team planted 400 seedlings of Narra and Kalantas species in Barangay San Ramon, Buhi after teaching the participants the proper handling and planting of the seedlings. On the other hand, the Lake Lanao team planted 500 seedlings of assorted forest and fruit bearing trees with the personnel of Western Mindanao Command at Kampo Ranao, Marawi City.

According to the International Tree Foundation, each tree planted sequesters around 14.7 kg of carbon dioxide each year for 20 years. Thus, planting 100,000 trees each year would reduce an organization’s annual carbon footprint by 1,470 tons.

In pursuit of its watershed management mandate, NPC performs rehabilitation, resource development and protection programs for 11 watershed reservations in the country which totals to around 500,000 hectares.
