NPC powers up nine new areas in Samar
Around 1,200 households in remote villages in Eastern and Northern Samar will now have access to electricity as NPC completes power facilities in Guiuan, Dolores, and Oras in Eastern Samar and in Tarnate in Northern Samar.
NPC has opened facilities in Cagusu-an, Habag, Inapulangan in Guiuan and Hilabaan and Tikling in Dolores, while the electrification of Suluan in Guian and Sta Monica in Dolores is scheduled before the year ends or after the electric cooperative finishes the distribution system.
Early this year, NPC switched on its diesel power plant in Casuguran, also in Eastern Samar.
NPC has allocated 86 million pesos for the project which consisted of nine generating sets with a total capacity of 350 kW. The ninth genset was allocated for another new area, Tarnate in Northern Samar which is also scheduled for energization in 2021.
With NPC-SPUG’s presence in the areas, local economies can be improved, as well as the agriculture sector which remains one of the major industries in the province.
NPC, as mandated by the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 or Republic Act 9136, is tasked to perform missionary electrification in the farthest communities and islands not connected to the main grid. It is in this capacity that the corporation operates 276 Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) plants in 189 municipalities across 35 provinces in the country.
