National ID law signed

The Philippine Identification System Act under Republic Act No. 11055 was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte earlier this month to establish a single national identification system that will pave way for better governance.

The President said that the National ID system will enhance government transactions through delivery of efficient service and prevention of red tape. It will likewise create a more conducive environment for trade and commerce.

Under RA 11055, the ID system called PhilSys will be incorporated in all identification systems of government agencies and serve as permanent identification number for each individual. The law further assigns the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) to act as the PhilSys Registry. It also ensures the individual’s right to privacy is protected.

PSA said that all Filipinos and resident aliens are expected to be registered with PhilSys in two to five years.
