Bethezel L. Ricacho
Plant Head, Claveria DPP
Bicol Operations Division

What makes a female engineer different from a male engineer? Apparently, none and this is proven by our newly assigned plant head of Claveria Diesel Power Plant, Engr. Bethezel Ricacho.

“Whatever they can do, I can do,” Beth said when asked on being a woman in her chosen field. She said that growing up with an only brother and finishing her college degree with almost an all-men class allowed her to get used to thriving in a male-dominated industry.

As a blossoming leader at NPC, Engr. Beth said that the best lesson she learned so far in operations is the significance of expressing what you have to say.

“If you have an idea or you think that you are right, you say it and you say it now, because if you keep on being silent, then you forego the chance na masabi mo iyon o magagawan ng action,” she said.

Engr. Beth said that this would also be her leadership style saying, “[my people] can tell me what they need and we’ll see if we can do anything. Kung hindi ko kaya, we’ll raise it. [What matter is they tell me] kasi hindi ko mahuhulaan yan.”

She said that she’s thankful for the mentorship and support she receive from her superiors at the Bicol Operations Division.

For her piece of advice to her fellow women in engineering, she urged “lumabas sila, hindi kailangang makulong sa kinalakihang tradisyon, na parang sapatos na ipapasuot na lang sayo. Decide on what you want then panindigan mo. Walang mahirap kung susubukan.”

Mauro L. Marcelo, Jr.
(Retired) Department Manager
Asset Preservation, RMS

The year was 1979. He was looking for something different and rare and found it at National Power Corporation – nuclear energy.

Mahilig ako sa hindi common at conventional, so when NPC was exploring nuclear energy then, I was attracted and applied,” Sir Mao shared on his last day in office.

On the same day, he also expressed his gratitude for NPC for the mountain of blessings he received through it – ‘nagkaroon ako ng bahay, sasakyan, nakapag-travel and gained professional advancement.’

Asked on a memorable struggle he had at work, Sir Mao talked about being assigned to be the Asset Preservation Department Manager in 2003 after the implementation of EPIRA.

“There were lot of issues then for me to work on – legal and personnel issues. Ginusto ko na mag-resign pero sa tulong at encouragement ng mga kasama ko, we were all able to surpass it,” he said.

With 38 years of service with NPC, Sir Mao realized that the most important lesson he learned was being diligent towards work. ‘Kung pa-easy-easy lang, problems will surely arise. Dapat pag-aaaralan mabuti ang trabaho and maging responsible as you go up [the corporate ladder].’

If ever he will be remembered in NPC and the energy industry, he wants to be remembered as the ‘nuclear guy.’

One would think that his most memorable experience in NPC would be something recent, but when asked about it, he went as far way back as his first year with NPC in 1979.

Engr. Ramil was beaming with pride along with his colleagues when the launch of the major transmission line systems in Masbate happened in January. He will be leaving Masbate, his second home for 11 months and will be transferring to Palawan to assist in the ongoing transmission projects there. Thus came his ardent letter to the province he came to know and love, as if it’s a person he’s devoted to.
