Maria Cristina Falls Public Viewing Suspended Due to Landslides
The Agus 6 & 7 Hydroelectric Power Plant Complex (HPPC) Management has announced the temporary suspension of public viewing at the Maria Cristina Falls due to the ongoing risk of landslides.
The landslides occurred on April 19, 2022, along the Agus 6 Agus 7 road, which is the same road leading to the falls. The landslides were caused by the constant rains that saturated the ground and caused it to collapse. Since then, there have been several incidents of falling rocks and debris, the most recent of which occurred on January 13, 2023.
The HPPC Management has issued the temporary suspension of public viewing in order to protect the safety of visitors. The public viewing will resume once the engineering interventions to stabilize the slope have been completed. These interventions are expected to be implemented in 2024 by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in coordination with the Lone Congressional District Office of Iligan City.
The Maria Cristina Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines. It is a 321.5-foot (98-meter) waterfall that is located in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte. The falls is known for its natural beauty and its role as a source of hydroelectric power.
